The Rollercoster Continues

This past week had many ups and downs as we figure many weeks from this point on will continue to be. At times we felt like a dog chasing our own tail never to make any real progress. We continued to get stonewalled on things because we had not met with Babies Can’t Wait yet, which was frustrating because we had contacted them two weeks prior and was told we would hear back within a few days. Many of our financial decisions depend on meeting with them and finding out what we may or may not qualify for. But, by the end of the week we were able to get two good bits of information. After numerous phone calls to bug Babies Can't Wait we were finally able to get an appointment (next Friday) which should help us get the ball rolling on speech therapy. We also met with Georgia Pines and will now be having a parent advisor come speak with us twice a month for the next year to year and a half. Through Ga Pines they are allowing us to get a loaner hearing aid from them while we work on funding for the aids we will purchase. She will be fitted for these aids on Tuesday which should be an exciting day for us. We had a good visit to The Atlanta Speech School on Thursday, which I felt was very reassuring for both of us. We were able to see many kids who had been in similar situations as Amelia and even many worse. The reassuring part was seeing how well (clearly) these kids were talking. My biggest fears prior to this week had been that Amelia’s condition may be progressive and would have to result in cochlear implants. After seeing these kids I feel much better about things if that is the road that God chooses to take us down. This also did reiterate the fact that we will need to spend a lot of time on her therapy both at home and with a therapist. Friday was an interesting day because the lesson of the week at Mommy School was to study the anatomy of the ear and how it works. Each of the kids cut out their own ears that they wore on a headband. During the lesson Amelia’s ear molds were delivered and so could be incorporated into the lesson also. Once again we must say thank you to all of our wonderful friends and family who are there to lend an ear, ask us out for a breather away, and provide us with valuable resources. We will definitely have n update come Tuesday and maybe a video of Amelia from her first true hearing moments.
